The BP-51 system is a direct bolt-in solution using the vehicle’s existing mounting locations and features remote reservoirs, aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum shock bodies, and externally accessible adjusters for dialing in the suspension to suit changing loads, terrain, and driving conditions.

The Old Man Emu BP-51 is ARB’s premium adjustable bypass shock absorber, developed to deliver a high level of both on-road comfort and off-road control for the INEOS Grenadier.

Unlike conventional shock absorbers that primarily generate damping through fluid movement across the piston, the BP-51 incorporates internal bypass passages that allow shock fluid to move around the piston at specific points in its travel. This creates position-sensitive damping, allowing the shock to remain more compliant around normal ride height while progressively increasing damping as the suspension approaches full compression or extension.

The result is a suspension that can provide a comfortable, controlled ride during everyday driving while offering increased support as terrain becomes more demanding. Greater damping near the ends of the shock stroke helps control larger impacts and reduces harsh bottoming or topping out.

BP-51 shocks also feature 10 levels of independent compression adjustment and 10 levels of independent rebound adjustment, giving the driver the ability to fine-tune suspension behavior directly on the vehicle. Adjustments can be made to account for changes in vehicle weight, accessories, cargo, terrain, or individual ride preference.

Remote reservoirs increase the system’s oil capacity and assist with heat management during extended periods of demanding off-road use. The 51mm shock bodies are manufactured from aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum with a Type III hard-anodized finish for improved heat dissipation, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Internal bypass passages allow the BP-51 to vary damping based on the position of the piston within the shock body. The suspension remains compliant around normal ride height while damping progressively increases toward full compression and extension for greater control over larger impacts and rough terrain.

Every BP-51 application is engineered around the vehicle it is intended for. The Grenadier system utilizes existing suspension mounting locations for a clean installation without requiring additional chassis modifications.

Bypass Technology

Traditional velocity-sensitive shock absorbers increase damping as piston speed increases. The BP-51 combines this principle with position-sensitive damping through its internal bypass design.

During normal suspension movement, a portion of the shock fluid can travel through bypass passages around the piston, allowing a more compliant response. As the piston approaches either end of its travel, available bypass flow decreases and damping increases.

This progressive change in damping helps provide:

Development & Manufacturing

BP-51 shock absorbers are designed, developed, tested, and manufactured in-house by ARB.

The system uses aircraft-grade 6061 anodized aluminum shock bodies, selected for efficient heat dissipation and corrosion resistance. ARB utilizes dedicated machining and hard-anodizing processes to maintain control over manufacturing quality.
