Sprinter FAQ

Get that great ride!

Like many owners of conversion vans, we’ve noticed how dramatically the ride quality of the stock suspension diminishes once you build your rig out and load it with equipment. We’ve solved these problems before, and our new Mercedes-Benz Ride Improvement Package (RIP Kit for short) now solves it for our beloved Sprinter owners.

Agile Off Road is here to answer your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter questions! Feel free to submit new questions in the comments below!

FAQ

What is the largest tire I can fit on a 2019+ Mercedes Sprinter 2500? (VS30)

With a factory offset wheel (50-54mm) a 2019+ 4×4 Sprinter 2500 can safely run 245/70-R17 tires without fender modification. With the installation of Agile Mini-Fenders 275/70-R17 tires fit any Sprinter wheel without rubbing.

What is the largest tire I can fit on a 2019+ Mercedes Sprinter 3500? (VS30)

The largest recommended tires sizes for the third generation 2019+ Mercedes Sprinter 3500 (VS30) are:

  • 2WD Sprinter 3500: 235/85-R16
  • 4×4 Sprinter 3500: 235/85-R16

What is the largest tire I can fit on a 2007-2018 (NCV3) Mercedes Sprinter?

The largest recommended tires sizes for the second generation (2007-2018) Mercedes Sprinter are:

  • 2WD Sprinter 2500: 265/70-R17
  • 4×4 Sprinter 2500: 275/70-R17
  • 2WD Sprinter 3500: 235/85-R16
  • 4×4 Sprinter 3500: 235/85-R16

Which Sprinters will the aluminum replacement fuel tank fit on?

The ACGB Replacement Fuel Tank is compatible with all 2nd generation (NCV3 2007 – 2018) & 3rd generation (VS30 2019+) Mercedes Sprinter 2500 & 3500s. This tank’s footprint starts where the factory tank is located and extends all the way thru the cavity outside of the driver side frame rail. Because of this no heaters, tanks, or batteries can be mounted on that side under the van.

Our Auxiliary Fuel Tanks are a great alternative for those looking to extend the Sprinter’s fuel range.

Does Agile make a 4×4 conversion kit for Mercedes-Benz Sprinter?

No, not at this time. Because Mercedes makes 4 wheel drive an option from the factory we felt it was best to leave the design & installation of the system to them so we could focus on improving other areas such as suspension.

Is there a manual or air locker available for the Mercedes Sprinter rear differential?

At this time there is no aftermarket locker available in the U.S for second generation (NCV3 2006-2018) Sprinters. The rear end is manufactured by Mercedes. Gear ratio is either 3.92 or 4.18 depending on spec.

I would like electric entry steps for driver, co-driver and middle rear door for ease of entry and a additional 20 gallon tank for the new sprinter I am buying, can you assist me and accomplish this?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Please fill out the form at the bottom of our 20-Gallon Sprinter Fuel Tank page and include any relevant details of your build. We’ll get back to you with a quote as soon as possible.

  2. Is there any kind of brake improvement package for the sprinter?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

We have a Sprinter Brake Upgrade Kit featuring slotted rotors, performance pads and stainless steel brake lines available in our online store. Fits 2007 – 2018 2WD & 4×4 Sprinters.

  3. Great FAQs, thank you! Is the 2019 year included in the largest tire size list above? Do you have recommendations on pairing the KO2s and Black Rhinos on a 2019 Sprinter 4×4? The local LS couldn’t even find the required bolt pattern. Adding this to your FAQ list would be helpful. Much appreciated!

We install BFG K02 tires on 95% of vans we work on. We’re big fans! We also outfit plenty of Sprinters with Black Rhino wheels. Click here to see all of our Sprinter Wheel & Tire offerings.

Hi, if you fit the 275/70-R17 the speedo will not be calibrated. Is it possible to adjust that?

        1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

There is no speedometer calibration available and we don’t find it necessary as it’s only 5% off from stock with that size. When your speedometer displays 70 you’d actually be going 74 MPH. At slower speeds, the difference is even less.

  4. Richard Heider

Can you give me an estimate on the Sprinter Brake Upgrade? I would have the work done, not do it myself. The brakes on the 2500 Sprinter a mushy, not like the brakes on a factory Mercedes car.

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Pricing on our Sprinter Brake Upgrade kit is $1099.99. We charge $250 for install.

  5. Hello, do you offer a RIP kit for a 2006 2500 cargo (114wb if it matters)?

    Thanks,

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Khai, the only suspension product we offer for the 2006 Sprinter is a custom-tuned Fox 2.0 rear shock. If you have further inquiries please email us at info@agileoffroad.com.

  6. Galen Peterson

Are the Maximum Tire sizes listed for stock vehicles? How dose the fitting change with the 2wd NCV3 Rip Kit? (2500)
    Thanks!

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Galen the max tire size listed for 2007-2018 (NCV3) Sprinter is for both stock & lifted vans.

  7. I have a 2008 Sprinter Navion Motor home and would like to change the wimpy sounding horn.
I do not see the location of it. Can you please send a graphic of where it is?
And what is the best recommendation for replacement?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Hello Rick. Your horn should be located somewhere underneath the front bumper cover. Although we don’t have a Horn Upgrade Kit available for your year Sprinter (due to the cooling fans in the front being in the way of our mounting bracket) you can still install the PIAA dual bass horns. You’ll just have to fabricate/get creative with a mounting location. Email us at info@agileoffroad.com for more info.

  8. Can you verify whether a 275/70/17 will work without tripping the 2019 MBUX cruise control system? It is our understanding you have had success running them over a number of miles. Thanks, Joe

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Joe we’ve installed 275/70-R17 on quite a few 2019 4×4 Sprinters both with and without our RIP kit. We’ve had zero trouble with the MB cruise control system. The only modification required to run tires this size is to replace the stock lower front fender with our “No-Rub” replacement fender.

  9. what is the largest tire that can be put on a 2019 3500 HD 4×4 170 EX sprinter with dually rears without lift or well modification?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

The largest tire we recommend on Sprinter 3500 is 235/85-R16. We recently installed a set of BFG K02s in this size on a 2020 Winnebago Boldt.

  10. Adrian Rosu

What is the largest tire size with your no-rub mud guard using the oem 16″ rim, on a 2019 4×4 Sprinter Passenger Van? Also, is there an estimate for when AMP powersteps will be available for the 2019 Sprinters.

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

265/75-R16 is our recommendation. However, we haven’t encountered that specific combination yet (which means you may not need the no-rub fender). We’ll certainly update you once we’ve tried it. The majority of our 2019 Sprinter customers are running 17″ wheels when upgrading tires.

AMP Powersteps are available for 2019+ Sprinters for installation at our shop!

  11. Elikem, that’s great news. Is the 75/70/17 the largest tire working with the MBUX cruise control. No rubs, fuel tank, etc in order

  12. Hi Guys, I have a 2019 4×4 Sprinter currently at Campovan in Santa Barbara getting interior build out. They referred me to you, and I ordered five 17” Evo wheels from you guys and I am waiting for them to come in. I had a 2015 4×4 with 265 75 16s and mainly drove on forrest service roads and in snow, not too much rough off-roading, but the ride was mushy and especially not good if I encountered wash board. I would like to make some additional suspension improvements with you:

    Questions:
    1. I like the looks of the RIP, but I wonder if your RIP will be detrimental to my warranty and extended warranty with MBZ?
    2. If I am going to 265 70 R17s o my new Evos and I don’t do the full RIP, is there a swap-out of factory front and rear shocks/struts/springs that you would still recommend as sort of a middle ground approach? In other words, what is the list of everything you still suggest if I don’t go with ”full RIP”?
    3. My local tire guy in Ventura is a long time friend and I loyally must purchase my tires from him. If I go Toyo Open Country AT II E series, do you think those would be quieter than BF Goodrich? I am on pavement 95% of the time – would you still do BFG?

Thanks in advance for help. By the way, Lisa is very helpful and does a great job.

    Glen —

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

      Hello Glen.

      1. We have not heard of any issues with our kit affecting the MB warranty. We also supply a one year warranty on all Agile products.

      2. If you’re not looking to replace or add any springs, we offer a Koni front strut and rear shock package for the Sprinter 4×4.

      3. We’re fans of the BFG KO2 Tires, they fit the lifestyle of the typical active van owner, which appears to be similar to yourself with a higher percentage of on-road use.

  13. Elikem. Question about your Sprinter dually swaps. The standard OEM wheel is a 16×5.5″ (I’m assuming the inner rear are the same). So when you sell the dually wheel and tire combo and it’s just the fronts and outers, what do you do with the inner OEMs since you’re really not supposed to put anything wider than 215 on a 5.5″ rim?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

While BFG does recommend 6″ wide wheels with their 235 tires, we’ve successfully paired 235/85-R16s K02s on the 5.5″ Ultra, Alcoa & factory steel wheels. We’ve always alerted our customers of BFGs recommendations. And furthermore, we’ve had exactly ZERO ISSUES on hundreds of installations and are confident recommending this set up.

  14. Are Amp power running boards available to purchase for the 2019 4×4 144 sprinter? And will they fit with the factory heater booster option. Can you still run the larger fuel tank option with those running boards and heater. Would like to purchase the running boards and as large a fuel tank as possible.

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Mike, we can perform AMP Powerstep installations for 2019+ Sprinters at our Santee, CA shop. However, we do not have a shippable kit at this time. In your particular application, we’d most likely use a custom longer length driver-side step because it allows us to move the mounting location to allow more room for accessories mounted underneath the vehicle. Please fill out the form at the bottom of any of our Sprinter Fuel Tank pages and mention you’re interested in AMP Powersteps & an Espar heater. We’d be happy to discuss your options further.

  15. I’m planning to purchase an RV using a Sprinter 2500 (current mfg) chassis. A 25 gallon fuel tank doesn’t cut it. Are you guys willing to consider RV upgrades?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Don, we offer several auxiliary & replacement fuel tank options for Sprinter 2500. Compatibility with your vehicle will depend on what accessories & equipment you have mounted underneath the vehicle. View our Sprinter Fuel Tanks for more info.

  16. what is the largest tire I can put on my 2019 170ext. 3500 4×4 dually?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Hello Ed! 235/85-R16 is the largest tire we recommend on 2019+ Sprinter 3500.

  17. Hi there, if you go for a larger tyre such as the 245/70/16, does this size fit were the spare tyre is it do you need to mount on a roof rack? Thanks

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Hello Jeremy. Anything smaller than a 265/70-R17 tire will fit in the stock spare tire carrier basket (albeit snugly). For 275+ width tires we offer an Oversized Spare Tire Basket kit containing drop down brackets for the tire basket & instructions on how to stretch the basket to accommodate the larger tire.

If you’re looking to relocate the spare tire, we also have Rear Door Tire Carriers for both 2007-18 & 2019+ Sprinters.

  18. Jeanette Bonnell

I have a 2013 Winnebago ERA 3500 MBZ (24′). I’m considering the RIP Kit. What is the turnaround time for installation and cost? I just purchased new tires so I’m assuming I can still have those on my car but with the option of putting larger tires on at a later time. I saw on line the RIP kit itself is 3200$

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

You will certainly have the option to go with a larger tire at a later time after the RIP Jeanette. Please “Request a quote” on our RIP Kit page. We’ll get back to you with installed pricing and scheduling availability.

  19. Does the Dodge sprinter share any compatibility with any of the RIP kits?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

It the Dodge is built on the NCV3 2008-2018 chassis the RIP kit will work.

  20. Any reports back as to whether or not 265/75/16s work on 2019+ stock OEM wheels without having to install no-rub fenders? Mixed reports on sprinter forum. thanks!

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Jonathan, we have not tried that specific wheel & tire combination. Our recommendation would be to run the No Rub fenders, but we cannot say for sure whether it’s required to fit that tire on your vehicle without issue.

  21. McKinley Thompson

We’re very happy with our 2WD RIP kit on our 2008 Sprinter with Rhino’s and KO2’s. Were buying and new 2019 2500 Sprinter 4×4 and wondered if we can fit the Revel brighter lights on this cargo van? Also plan to have Agile put a RIP kit on this van!

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Glad you’re still enjoying the RIP on your 08! And congrats on your new Sprinter. If by brighter lights you’re referring to the LED headlights, those available as an option from Mercedes. You can NOT add them as an aftermarket option because they use a different wiring harness and different software programming.

However all of the other aftermarket light bars, spot & flood lights, etc. we have install on the Revels will work perfectly on your new rig!

  22. Are you working on a RIP for 2019+ 1500 RWD 144 highroof passenger gasser?

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Todd, the suspension components of Sprinter 1500 are identical to the 2500. Our standard 2WD Sprinter RIP Kit will fit your vehicle with no issues.

      1. That’s true even with mine being a gas engine?

        1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Correct. Feel free to email us directly (info@agileoffroad.com) with questions regarding your specific suspension needs.

  23. Hey Elikem!

We are picking up our new 2020 170 4X4 at the end of the month and are busy finalizing our build plans. In reading thru the above FAQ’s and Q&A’s, I don’t see info to running 18″ wheels.

    1. We’ve spec’ed 18×8 Black Havasu’s with 265/65R-18’s. It seems that there aren’t very many sprinters running 18’s. Not a good idea? If not…. why not?
    2. If the suspension & body have to be modified to support successfully running 265/65R-18’s, what mods are required?

Thank you for all of the great info!

    -Z

    1. Elikem - AgileOffRoad.com

Zurich congrats on your new Sprinter. 17-inch wheels are more popular because there are simply more wheel and all-terrain tire options available. Also, the taller sidewall on a 17-inch tire provides a larger contact patch when airing down during off-road use. At the end of the day, it’s a personal preference and there’s no reason not to run 18s.

265/65-R18 is equivalent to 265/70-R17. To run that size you’d need our No Rub fenders for the front tires to clear the body & mudflap. No suspension modifications required… but they are recommended for Ride Improvement 😀
