Get to Know Your Sprinter: Masterclass Recap

As we wrap up March, we kicked things off with our first two Get to Know Your Sprinter Masterclass at Agile Offroad. This year’s class brought together a total group of 24 passionate van enthusiasts, eager to learn everything from off-roading essentials to recovery techniques, all while exploring the rugged terrain of Southern California.
Led by John, our CEO and off-road expert, the Sprinter Masterclass is divided into four levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. This month’s class was beginner course and covered it all, from the basics of off-roading to advanced techniques for tackling tough trails. Let’s dive into what went down during this epic week!
March 2025 Recap: 4 Days of Learning & Adventure
Day 1: Welcome to Agile Offroad HQ
The day kicked off early at Agile Offroad HQ, where attendees were welcomed with a hearty breakfast and fresh coffee—fuel for the adventures ahead. After settling in, participants had the chance to mingle with John, ask questions, and get ready to absorb a mountain of knowledge.
John started with the fundamentals: effective communication on the trail, the best tools and supplies to carry (including our Essential Tool List), and why an ARB Air Locker is a game-changer for off-roaders. The group learned about essential gear, like ARB air compressors, air-down equipment, and the importance of understanding vehicle GVW(Gross Vehicle Weight).
The day also included a deep dive into trail etiquette, how to handle your vehicle when switching between 2WD and 4WD, and tips for knowing when to engage low range. As a bonus, John introduced our latest products, giving attendees a sneak peek into what’s new at Agile Offroad.
After the classroom session, the group moved into the showroom for an in-depth look at the Mercedes-Benz transfer case and 4WD system. John also took time to showcase his own Sprinter setup, answering questions and offering insights based on years of experience.
Day 2: Hitting the Trails
By 9 AM the next morning, the group was geared up and hitting the dirt in the Yuha Desert. The wind was howling on the way there, but once they dropped into the desert, the conditions calmed, setting the stage for an unforgettable day.
John led the group through the desert, stopping at key landmarks like the Yuha Well and Oyster Beds, before heading to Ocotillo Wells for some fun sandbar action. After a day filled with learning opportunities and some close calls dodging rocks, demonstrating the importance of diff covers and skid plates! The group then set up camp on BLM land at the southwest end of Ocotillo Wells. And of course, no desert adventure is complete without a campfire and some good conversation under the stars.
Day 3: Advanced Off-Roading Challenges
Day 3 was all about pushing the limits. John took the group to a more aggressive trail, where ARB Air Locker-equipped vehicles had a distinct advantage, making it clear just how much easier it is on the drivetrain compared to standard 4WD. The terrain was tough, but everyone rose to the challenge. Drivers had the option to take the easy way around or tackle the more difficult path, testing their skills and knowledge. Spoiler alert: everyone made it through!
After conquering the challenge, the group drove through Canyon Sin Nombre and stopped for lunch at the Mud Caves, a perfect spot to recharge before continuing. The day ended with the group setting up camp at Hollywood & Vine, where they were greeted by the unique wildlife of the desert. Some chose to call it a day, while others continued their off-road journey.
Day 4: Wrapping Up in Anza-Borrego
For the final day, John and the remaining participants headed to Anza-Borrego to visit the farmers market and soak in the sights before wrapping up the masterclass. It was a great way to wind down after a few days of intense learning, bonding, and pushing the limits on some of the best trails in Southern California.
As the class ended, everyone walked away with new skills, new friendships, and a whole lot of confidence behind the wheel. We’re already looking forward to the next group of van lovers, and we can’t wait to see where their off-road adventures take them.
